The Portuguese hiring occurred 17 days after Gernot Rohr, a Franco-German, was fired as coach of the Super Eagles.

Following an inconspicuous playing career, he went on to manage various clubs in his homeland, notably Sporting CP and Porto, which he led to the 2005 UEFA Cup Final[1]. He also spent a lot of time in Arab countries, where he was in command of the Saudi Arabian national squad.
