Aggrieved youths in the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State have protested over the continuous electricity blackout that has enveloped their communities for over a year.
The protesting youths mostly from Irele, Ilaje, Okitipupa, Ese-Odo, Okeigbo and Odigbo, expressed anger over the total darkness in some areas and blamed the ruling elite from the district for not restoring light to the affected districts.
The six Local Council Areas of the Southern Senatorial part of Ondo State have been in total darkness for more than a year; thereby, parlaying socio-economic and business activities of the people in the affected areas.
They wondered why the political leaders from the State have not done enough to intervene on the issue, and as well questioning the authorities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) who has remained recalcitrant in restoring electricity back to the affected district after cutting the areas off from the national grid.
Recently BEDC under the control of Funke Osinbodo claimed that the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State owed an outstanding electricity bill gulping up to N1.9 billion and as a result, electricity could not be restored to the affected areas until the debt is paid.
