APC lambastes Ebonyi Assembly, Umahi over LG law, governance

The Coordinator, Youth League, Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Josiah Onu Abaa has described as draconian the recent amendment of Ebonyi State Local Government Law which stipulates one year imprisonment for appointed care taker committee chairmen.

The youth leader made his feelings known in Abakaliki while reacting to the law which also bars the caretaker committee chairmen from seeking elective positions for three years said it contravenes the provisions of the electoral law and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Comrade Abaa equally condemned in its totality the high rate of hunger ravaging the people of Ebonyi State which he said is occasioned by the delay in the payment of workers’ salary.

According to him, the bulk of buyers of any commodity in Abakaliki are civil servants such that the non-payment of their salaries affected also business activities in Ebonyi State.

He maintained further that the Umahi’s administration is engaging the workers of Ebonyi State in a fruitless battle, saying that the government has no moral justification not to pay the workers it promised 100% salary during the electioneering campaign.

While advising the people of Ebonyi State to keep faith with President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling APC, he assured that the people of Ebonyi State and South-East zone would not regret their support to APC.

He said APC Youth League in Ebonyi State commenced the mobilization of supporters at the grassroots with the aim of garnering support for the party even as he maintained that APC will take over power from the opposition PDP in forthcoming election.

“Such is a draconian law passed by people who claimed to be honourable members who were elected by the same people who will be appointed and after one year, prevented from contesting election in the next three years.

“It is inimical to the growth of democracy and can discourage popular leaders who are liked by their people to contest election. May be such law is made for members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and not for the people of Ebonyi State. Even in the electoral act and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, there is no such provision. We cannot be part of it so when other parties come into power, it will be repealed.
