The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the Kogi State governorship election, Abubakar Audu, has said the campaign of calumny against him by the Peoples Democratic Party cannot save the latter from an imminent defeat in the coming governorship poll.
Audu said this after a meeting with APC’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and other party leaders at the party headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
He described as “arrant nonsense” reports making the rounds that he promised to refund N11bn he allegedly misappropriated during his first tenure as governor.
Audu was reacting to reports allegedly quoting the state chairman of the APC, Alhaji Hadi Ametuo, as making the promise on Audu’s behalf during a recent campaign stop in one of the local government areas of the state.
In his response to a question on the subject, Audu said, “That is arrant nonsense, that is arrant nonsense. It is the PDP that originated the report and it will not help them.”
Audu is one of several former governors being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedlt misappropriating N11bn of funds belonging to the state during his tenure as governor between 1999 and 2003.
He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, a denial which his opponents described as a belated attempt to “launder his image.”
