How Plateau Speaker Nuhu, who was impeached, claimed N300 million for a bulletproof car

Plateau Speaker Nuhu was impeached after claiming N300 million for a bulletproof automobile.

The impeached Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba Nuhu, bought a bullet-proof automobile for less than N100 million and inflated its price to N300 million to swindle public funds, according to a petition filed by the Youths Rights Against Corruption (YRAC).

The group had filed a complaint with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accusing Nuhu of financial embezzlement and demanding that he be investigated. He was also accused of misusing his position, according to the group.

In a petition titled "Petition Against Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker, Nuhu Abok Ayuba On Gross Financial Misconduct, Criminal Breach Of Public Trust, And Abuse Of Office," the group's Executive Director, Comrade Abednego Musa, asked Nuhu to resign immediately pending the outcome of the EFCC investigation.

Ayuba was also accused of defrauding the government of N375 million by utilizing fictional firms as fronts for the procurement of 50 fertilizer trucks.

"Purchase of a bullet-proof car for less than N100 million and inflation of its price to N300 million," the petition claimed. Aside from being overpriced by 200 percent, the vehicle was purchased in a dubious manner, in violation of procurement laws.

"Payment of colossal amounts of N150 million as Basic Travelling Allowances (BTA) for Assembly members without prior discussion or official permission by the House."

"Compromise of operational procedures, the establishment of an extra-legal hierarchy, and the favoritism of cronies at the expense of the system." Under Abok's leadership, this is by far the worst disaster to strike the Lagos House of Assembly and the Plateau State House of Assembly.

"Collected N500 million in laundered cash through a suspended APC Chairman to recruit innocent House members in order to destabilize the state and make it ungovernable by inducing a crisis."

If the allegations against the impeached Speaker are not examined, the petition claims, it will be a breach of public confidence.

Nuhu was impeached in plenary on Thursday after 16 of the Assembly's 24 members voted him out.

Sanda Yakubu, a member of the state's Pingana constituency in the Bassa Local Government Area, has taken his seat.
