The beginning of the new school year is just around the corner, which means you’ll soon be returning to campus to continue your studies. However, you might be wondering what this upcoming year will look like when it comes to your classes and exams.

To help you prepare, here’s a comprehensive look at the academic calendar for the 2022-2023 school year at American University in Washington DC.

Classes Begin


September 10th marks the start of classes at American University. The academic calendar consists of four 15-week semesters, and each semester has two 8-week quarters with an additional week of study between them. The semester begins on Monday, September 10th and ends on Friday, December 21st. Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 11:30am and 12:00pm to 4:30pm.

Labor Day

Spring Break


American University will have a Spring Break from March 11-March 18. This is a great time to take some time off before finals and enjoy some sun and beach time with friends or family.

Last Day of Classes


Midterms are in full swing, and finals are just around the corner. That means that it's time to prepare for your last day of classes on Wednesday, December 18th! Be sure to grab all your belongings from your locker before you head out to enjoy a well-deserved break.

Reading Day


No classes are held on Reading Day. This day is designed to allow students to review and prepare for upcoming assignments or exams. Reading Day is a mandated part of the academic calendar, and all students at AU are expected to observe it.

Final Exams


This year, final exams will be offered between December 7th and December 12th. This will allow students to take finals on their own schedules and not have to worry about being present in classes during this time of year when many are traveling home for Christmas.
